Our Journey So Far
The Model ECOWAS Summit, launched in 2014, was born from a vision to empower young leaders to take an active role in shaping the future of regional integration and development.
Inspired by the real ECOWAS institution, founded in 1975 to foster economic cooperation and political stability in West Africa, the summit provides youth with a unique platform to simulate the decision-making processes that shape the region’s most pressing issues.
The first-ever summit was held in Accra, Ghana, under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration. Following its success, the summit returned in 2016 and 2018, continuing under the same ministry’s support. In 2021, the 4th edition took place in Abuja, Nigeria, and the 5th edition was held virtually due to global circumstances.
Since its inception, the summit has brought together more than 2,000 young people, offering a space for youth to collaborate on building solutions for West Africa’s future. The summit has attracted participants not only from across the region but also from countries beyond, including Cameroon, Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom, and Ethiopia. With each edition, the Model ECOWAS Summit continues to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders, actively contributing to the growth and development of West Africa.

The summit aims to foster leadership, diplomacy, and governance skills in the next generation of West African leaders, while creating a space for youth to contribute to regional integration, peacebuilding, and sustainable development.
By encouraging cross-cultural exchange and networking, the summit equips participants with practical skills in diplomacy, negotiation, and policy-making, enhancing their critical thinking, public speaking, and collaboration abilities.
